Notes from Organizational Meeting (Aug. 13, 2012)

Suggested Plan:
  • Organize ~2-3 Talk Sessions Per Week;
  • Discussion Sections (Primarily Self-Organized) - Break into smaller, more specialized groups (post on Wiki)

Advice for Speakers
  • Assume "expert audience"
  • Limit general introductions to the subject

  1. Experimental Status
    1. Systems/Materials: Organics; Kagome; Hyper-Kagome; He3; Quantum Spin-Ice; Cold Atoms realizations
  2. Available Theoretical Techniques
    1. Numerical - DMRG, PEPs, Tensor Network, Monte-Carlo (Quantum, Classical, Variational, etc...); Exact diagonalization
    2. Analytic - Exactly solvable models; slave-particle approaches (beyond slave-particles?); classification of spin-liquid states
  3. Open Questions
    • How to identify spin-liquids in theory and experiment?
      • How do we understand ground-state properties of spin-liquids? What are useful concepts (entanglement?)
      • What stabilizes/protects gapless spin-liquids
      • What is the "right" practical tool-kit for understanding spin-liquids
    • How can we "design" materials to realize spin-liquids
      • What types of interactions favor or stabilize spin-liquid phases?
    • What is the role of disorder and anisotropy?
      • Most of focus has been on SU(2) symmetric case, what are the effects of impurities, anisotropies, spin-orbit coupling etc...?
    • What happens upon doping a spin-liquid? More general, what happens when itinerant electrons coexist with frustrated magnetism?
    • Phase transitions and criticality involving spin-liquid phases

Social Aspects (Organizer: Lara Thompson)
  • Ideas: Weekly dinners (TBA/posted on wiki); hikes and other outdoor activities, etc...
